This wheelchair or ‘self-propelling chair’ came from Cockcroft House, the former Hay Union Workhouse. Many elderly and infirm paupers entered the workhouse as it was the only place they could receive medical care, especially if they were deemed ‘undeserving’. People living with disability were often shunned by Victorian society and hidden by their families. Sometimes their only refuge was the workhouse. Daeth y gadair olwyn, neu'r 'gadair hunanyriant' hon o Cockcroft House, sef Wyrcws Undeb y Gelli gynt. Byddai llawer o dlodion oedd yn hen ac yn eiddil yn dod i'r wyrcws am mai dyma'r unig le y gallent gael gofal meddygol, yn enwedig nad ystyrid eu bod yn teilyngu'r gofal. Byddai pobl a oedd yn byw gydag anabledd yn aml yn cael eu hanwybyddu gan y gymdeithas yn Oes Fictoria, a'u cuddio gan eu teuluoedd. Y Wyrcws oedd eu hunig ddewis ambell dro.
