In dark homes and cottages in rural areas especially during the winter, people needed light. Candles were expensive so during the summer reeds and rushes were collected, dried in the sun and dipped in animal fat. These lights were used in Welsh cottages into the early twentieth century. Mewn cartrefi a bythynnod tywyll mewn ardaloedd gwledig, yn enwedig yn ystod y gaeaf, byddai angen golau ar bobl. Roedd canhwyllau'n ddrud felly yn ystod yr haf cesglid brwyni o’r corsydd, eu sychu yn yr haul a'u dipio mewn braster anifeiliaid. Defnyddiwyd y goleuadau hyn mewn bythynnod Cymreig hyd ddechrau'r ugeinfed ganrif.
