Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) Uniform. The uniform consisted of a two-piece suit with a jacket and an A-line skirt. The jacket featured two triangular breast pockets, brass buttons, chevron patches over the sleeves and a wide belt. This uniform has a lanyard (braided cord) under the arm. A grey khaki blouse and tie would have been worn under the jacket. Tan stockings and sensible brown shoes completed the look. The ATS was the women’s branch of the British Army. Formed on 9th September 1938 it offered women the chance to volunteer and undertake non-combat duties. In December 1941 Parliament passed a second National Service Act calling up all unmarried women and childless widows between 20 and 30 years old. Later it was extended to include married women. Roles were initially limited to cooks, clerks, shop keepers, and drivers. As the war progressed, duties expanded to include telephonists, mess orderlies, butchers, bakers, postal workers, ammunition inspectors and military police. Princess Elizabeth volunteered with the ATS. Gwisg yr ATS (Gwasanaeth Tiriogaethol Cynorthwyol). Roedd y wisg yn cynnwys siwt deuddarn gyda siaced a sgert llinell A. Roedd dwy boced ar frest y siaced, mewn siâp triongl, botymau pres, clytiau chevron dros y llewys a belt llydan. O dan y fraich mae llinyn (cortyn plethedig). Bydda’r fenyw yn gwisgo blows llwyd caci gyda thei o dan y siaced. Ac i orffen y wisg byddai’n gwisgo hosanau melynddu ac esgidiau brown call. Yr ATS oedd cangen y merched o’r Fyddin Brydeinig. Fe’i sefydlwyd ar 9 Medi 1938 ac roedd yn cynnig cyfle i fenywod wirfoddoli a chyflawni dyletswyddau heb orfod brwydro. Yn Rhagfyr 1941 aeth Ail Ddeddf Gwasanaeth Cenedlaethol trwy’r Senedd yn galw ar unrhyw fenywod dibriod a gweddwon heb blant rhwng 20 a 30 oed. Yn ddiweddarach, cafodd ei ymestyn i gynnwys menywod priod. Yn y lle cyntaf, cyfyngwyd y swyddi i rai megis cogyddion, clercod, cadw siop a gyrrwyr. Wrth i’r rhyfel barhau, ehangwyd y dyletswyddau i gynnwys gweithio’r ffonau, swyddogion negesau ystafelloedd bwyta, cigyddion, pobyddion, gweithwyr post, archwilio ffrwydron rhyfel a’r heddlu milwrol. Bu’r Dywysoges Elizabeth yn gwirfoddoli gyda’r ATS.
