Encaustic tile from Strata Marcella Abbey Fragment. Inlaid. Bird, possibly a dove with a flower in its beak. Similar to A253 & A395.22. Y Strad Marchell or Strata Marcella Abbey was once the largest Cistercian monastery in Wales. It was founded in 1170 by Owain Cyfeiliog, Prince of Powys and built between 1190 and the early 1200s. Between 1400 and 1405 the buildings were subject to destruction during the Owain Glyndwr rising. By the 1500s the Abbey was in a state of poverty and finally closed in 1536 during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Anything of value inside was removed. The stone was sold and used to build local buildings including; Buttington Church, Belan School and Llanfair Caereinion Church. In 1890 the Powysland Club excavated the site led by Stephen W. Williams. Finds from this dig include a large collection of encaustic tiles, decorative masonry and small items which are now part of the museum collection. Little remains of Strata Marcella today and due to extreme weather events and flooding of the River Severn this site is at risk of being damaged or lost. Teilsen llosgliw o ddarn o Abaty Ystrad Marchell. Brithwaith. Aderyn, colomen efallai, gyda blodyn yn ei big. Tebyg i A253 ac A395.22. Abaty Ystrad Marchell oedd y fynachlog Sistersaidd fwyaf yng Nghymru ar un adeg. Fe’i sefydlwyd yn 1170 gan Owain Cyfeiliog, Tywysog Powys, a’i adeiladu rhwng 1190 a dechrau’r 13eg ganrif. Rhwng 1400 a 1405, dinistriwyd yr adeiladau yn ystod gwrthryfel Owain Glyndŵr. Erbyn yr 16eg ganrif, roedd yr Abaty mewn tlodi ac o’r diwedd fe’i caewyd yn 1536 fel rhan o ddiddymu’r mynachlogydd gan Harri’r VIII. Tynnwyd unrhyw beth o werth allan ohono. Gwerthwyd y cerrig a’u defnyddio i godi adeiladau lleol fel Eglwys Tal-y-bont, Ysgol Belan ac Eglwys Llanfair Caereinion. Yn 1890, cloddiwyd y safle gan Glwb Powysland, dan arweiniad Stephen W. Williams. Mae darganfyddiadau o’r gwaith cloddio’n cynnwys casgliad mawr o deils llosgliw, gwaith cerrig addurnol a mân eitemau sydd bellach yn rhan o gasgliad yr amgueddfa. Ychydig iawn sydd ar ôl o Ystrad Marchell heddiw ac oherwydd tywydd eithafol a llifogydd o Afon Hafren, mae perygl i’r safle gael ei ddifrodi neu golli.
