These “stovepipe” top hats were the standard headwear of British police officers until the 1860s. Considered sufficient to protect the officer from a blow to the head, when combined with blue tail coats they were also key to giving the police a civilian, rather than military, uniform. Yr hetiau “piben stôf” oedd penwisg safonol swyddogion heddlu Prydain tan y 1860au. Ystyriwyd eu bod yn ddigonol i amddiffyn y swyddog rhag ergyd i’r pen, ac ynghyd â’r cotiau cynffon gwennol glas roedden nhw hefyd yn allweddol i roi gwisg sifil yn hytrach na milwraidd i’r heddlu.
