Sheaths like this pillar-type one were designed to allow the user to keep one hand free whilst knitting so that other tasks, such as baby-care, could be carried out simultaneously. They were attached to the waist and sometimes carved with messages of love. Cafodd gweiniau fel hon, sydd fel polyn, eu cynllunio i alluogi'r defnyddiwr i gadw llaw yn rhydd wrth wau er mwyn cyflawni tasgau eraill, fel gofalu am fabi, ar yr un pryd. Clymwyd y waun at y wast ac weithiau roedd negeseuon o gariad wedi eu cerfio ynddi.
