Between 1832 and 1865 Colonel Watkins was in and out of Parliament as the Liberal MP for the Borough of Brecon. He built the grand mansion, Penoyre, not far from Brecon which cost so much that he finally died in poverty. He commissioned John Evan Thomas to create his family’s memorials in Brecon Cathedral. Rhwng 1832 a 1865, roedd Cyrnol Watkins i yn ôl ac ymlaen i’r Senedd fel yr AS Rhyddfrydol dros Fwrdeistref Aberhonddu. Adeiladodd y plasty mawreddog, Penoyre, nepell o Aberhonddu a gostiodd gymaint y bu iddo farw o dlodi yn y pen draw. Comisiynodd John Evan Thomas i greu cofebion ei deulu yn Eglwys Gadeiriol Aberhonddu.
