This cross-stitch sampler was created in 1833 by Mary Lewis, aged 10, to demonstrate her skill at needlework. The mid-19th century witnessed a change in the previously neglected education of children. Many girls not working in rural employment began to attend a school, where needlework was one of the main subjects.
